Days Out Further Afield
Wincle makes a wonderfully quiet base, but you are also well placed for some of the best days out in the north of England. Most of the destinations below are within an hour's drive, so you can be out for the day and still back for supper at the cottage.
Culture and heritage
Buxton is the nearest of the great spa towns, with its restored Georgian crescent, opera house and pavilion gardens. Jodrell Bank, home of the giant Lovell telescope, is a fascinating day for curious minds of all ages, and the market towns of Leek and Macclesfield both repay a wander with independent shops and good cafes.
For families
Alton Towers is close enough for a full day of rides and returns. The Peak Wildlife Park, with its walk-through enclosures, is a reliable favourite with younger children, and Blaze Farm's ice cream is practically on the doorstep.
Ideas at a glance
