Lambing Season on the Farm

Mellor Knowl is a working sheep farm, and spring is the busiest and most rewarding time of the farming year. Visit in the lambing weeks and the fields around your cottage fill with new arrivals finding their feet.

What you might see

From late winter into spring the flock comes down to the fields close to the farm, and from your windows and walks you can watch ewes with their lambs at every stage, from wobbly first steps to confident gangs racing along the walls in the evening sun. It is a wonderful time for children to see where food and farming really come from.

Enjoying it responsibly

A working farm in lambing time asks a little care from its visitors:

• Please keep to the footpaths and leave gates exactly as you find them
• Dogs must be on leads around the fields at all times during this season
• Give ewes with young lambs plenty of space, especially near the walls
• Ask us before approaching any of the stock, and we will tell you what is safe

The best time to come

Exact timing shifts a little each year with the weather, so if seeing the lambs matters to you, ask us when you enquire and we will point you at the right weeks. Spring also brings wildflowers, birdsong and quiet paths, the countryside at its freshest.
